Outstanding teaching and learning is further enhanced by a vast range of newly upgraded facilities. These include a purpose built indoor tennis centre with 4 courts; a trampoline gym; 8 outdoor netball courts; a sports hall; active playground; large sports field and a specialised PE classroom equipped with iPads and laptops.

Extra-Curricular Clubs and Teams
At Sir Jonathan North we offer a wide range of free extra-curricular activities during lunchtime and after school throughout all year groups. These provide students with the opportunity to develop their practical ability as well as their self-confidence, self-esteem, team work, inter-personal skills, communication and social skills.
Weekly fixtures allow students to represent the College in various teams across the city, county and nationally. These are highly successful and this is due not only to the commitment of the staff but also the dedication of the students.

In 2016 – 2017 Sir Jonathan North was proudly awarded the Gold Games Mark Award. Games Mark is a national accreditation that recognises the contribution of schools in encouraging participation in school sports and physical activity.
The PE team is always looking for new ways to engage and encourage students to be more physical in a variety of different roles. These roles include performing, officiating or leading in a variety of activities within lessons and College, as well as across the city and county. All year groups across the College are involved.

As outstanding practitioners, Sir Jonathan North’s PE teachers deliver exciting, high quality lessons to all students. Each week students participate in two one hour lessons, where they experience an extensive range of sports and physical activities and develop a range of transferable skills both physically, mentally and socially.
PE is taught in mixed ability tutor groups. Each sport or physical activity is studied for 7 – 8 weeks with a maximum of 10 different activities being studied over the year. Many of the sports and activities are taught in purpose built areas including a tennis centre and trampolining gym.

KS4 Core PE

If students have not chosen to take GCSE PE they continue to participate in a one hour PE lesson tailored to their needs throughout Key Stage 4. They are given the opportunity to create the curriculum they wish to study therefore creating independent and confident learners.
The core PE course is taught in options groups with a wide range of abilities in each group. Each student selects a sport or physical activity to participate in every 7 – 8 weeks. During this time they set individual targets to achieve.
Alongside the core PE lessons, students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular clubs and teams. The extensive range of activities ensures students are experiencing new and exciting opportunities whilst developing their confidence, social skills and resilience.
The selection of sports and physical activities focus on:
- Exercise and health
- Performing at maximum level
- Accurate replication
- Identifying and problem solving
- Exploring and communicating ideas, concepts and emotions.
During KS4 students are also given the opportunity to gain a qualification: The Sports Leaders’ UK Level 1 Award. This is a nationally recognised qualification that allows students to develop not only their leadership skills, but improve their confidence, organisation, social skills and preparation.
In completing this qualification students learn to:
- Develop existing skills and learn complex skills
- Develop teamwork, social and communication skills
- Develop leadership and interpersonal skills
- Plan and deliver successful leadership sessions.
These skills help to create an independent, well rounded student.

GCSE PE is an exciting opportunity for students to develop their knowledge of sport both practically and theoretically.
Studying PE at GCSE level enables those who enjoy sport, dance and physical activity to develop their knowledge and understanding of the value physical activity has as a part of healthy living.
Practical skills are honed and sharpened by high energy, fast paced sports lessons. As high quality practitioners teachers are able to offer a wealth of activities for students. Practical activities include trampolining, athletics, netball, basketball, badminton and football. Other optional activities are dance, swimming, tennis and horse riding.
All students undertaking GCSE PE are expected to attend compulsory lunch time and after school extra-curricular activities as part of this course. This further enhances their practical grade.
The theoretical element is worth 60% of the overall grade and is assessed through two written exams. Paper 1 investigates the physical factors affecting performance and paper 2 investigates socio-cultural issues and sports psychology.
The practical element is worth 40% of the overall grade and involves students participating in a team activity, an individual activity and a free activity. It also allows students to evaluate and analyse their performance in coursework.

For GCSE PE the team offers a range of study support and intervention sessions to ensure that all students reach their potential and their target grade.
The team offer numerous amounts of support materials and hand-outs given to students (also available for parents) including: A5 poster book, Year 10 revision guide, Year 11 revision guide, Year 10 revision questions, Year 11 revision questions, Year 10 revision notes, All Year 10 past exam papers, All Year 11 past exam papers and Year 11 revision notes.
