Following English baseline tests and reading age tests in Year 7, literacy intervention and provision are offered to students requiring additional support in the following ways:

1. Intervention groups in Years 7, 8 and 9 with a focus on phonics, reading comprehension, writing skill and oracy, depending on student needs.

Evidenced-based interventions used include:

  • Accelerated Reader
  • Reciprocal Reading
  • Fresh Start
  • Better Reading Programme

2. Breakfast and Lunchtime Clubs:

  • ‘Reading Rocks’ is an opportunity for students to be paired up with a reading ‘buddy’ from Year 9 and 10.This has proved extremely effective in raising students’ reading ages and promoting a love for reading for pleasure. The buddy will:
  • assist them with their reading choices
  • help them complete activities based on books they read
  • encourage them to read aloud
  • help them understand what they are reading.

3. Homework Club and Touch Typing Club at lunchtime.

Students with ‘Access to Exam’ arrangements are given reasonable adjustments during class tests and assessments.

Students are supported in-class with their Literacy, and given access to homework and ‘catch-up’ sessions in the Skills for Learning base.
