French and Spanish

Students are given the opportunity to opt for their preferred language from Year 7. Once students have chosen French or Spanish, they will continue to study the language in Year 8 and 9. In Year 7, students have two hours of French or Spanish, in Year 8 and Year 9 they have three hours per week.

As an innovative team, the Modern Foreign Languages teachers are constantly developing to ensure best practice. Resources and teaching are tailored and differentiated to meet the needs of individual students. Students are grouped based on ability, which ensures they make good progress and have a real sense of achievement after each lesson.

The curriculum covers a broad array of topics to enable students to confidently speak, read and write about everyday situations. A variety of methods such as role play and listening exercises are used to practise their language learning.

GCSE

The French and Spanish courses are very popular option choices at GCSE, as many students choose to carry on with a foreign language. Results have consistently been amongst the highest in the College and are significantly above the national average.

As a team of passionate linguists, the Modern Foreign Languages teachers at Sir Jonathan North constantly create new, dynamic and exciting ways to deliver the course content. The commitment and expertise of the teachers allow every student to be well-supported and challenged to ensure they make the best progress they possibly can.

The new Modern Foreign Languages GCSE courses help students develop their language skills in a variety of contexts and gain a broad understanding of the culture of countries and communities where French or Spanish is spoken.

Students study a wide variety of topics related to themselves and the world around them, all expanding on knowledge gained in Key Stage 3. Topics such as self; family; home life and free time give them the language skills and vocabulary needed to be confident holding a conversation with a native speaker. Learning more about the environment and customs, culture and traditions of French and Spanish speaking countries gives them a broader understanding of the language and a respect for other cultures.

Role plays have become an important part of the new programme of study, making learning a language more relevant to everyday real life situations. For example, students will learn how to buy items in a shop or communicate with a doctor. In lessons, students have the opportunity to speak French or Spanish with their teacher and other members of the class. They listen to CDs, read authentic materials and explore the internet to support their learning.

Students are supported by a foreign language assistant who helps them improve their pronunciation and their general knowledge of the language, as well as their understanding of the culture.

Both the French and Spanish AQA GCSE courses are assessed in the following skills:

Listening 25%
Speaking 25%
Reading 25%
Writing 25%

Students sit all their exams at the end of Year 11.
