Fairtrade Fortnight Schools Award 2017 - July 2017
In March, the Fair Trade Group applied for the Fairtrade Fortnight Schools Award 2017. The standard of entries this year was incredibly high and it was a tough decision by the judges but ours really stood out. We are pleased to say that Sir Jonathan North received first place and has been awarded £350 towards future Fair Trade work. Below we have shared something of the glowing email we received; ‘By running Fairtrade workshops for local primary schools at your Eco Event you reached a whole new audience with peer-to-peer learning. The judges also commented on how inspirational Naomi and Shahara’s speech is – it is clear that they have a very good understanding of Fairtrade and what it means to be a global citizen.’ Congratulations to the Fair Trade Group and their exceptionally hard work this year!
Fairtrade Fortnight at SJN - March 2017
During Fairtrade Fortnight Sir Jonathan North ran a Citizenship lesson on Fairtrade. This took place for all Year 8 students in their Humanities lessons. This year’s event challenged students to try Fairtrade products during their break time - from chocolate bars and bananas to homemade goodies. Their homework following this lesson was in two parts. Firstly, students were encouraged to motivate as many of their friends, family and teachers to put Fairtrade in their break! The second part was to raise money for the Fairtrade Foundation by collecting penny coins. In total Year 8 raised £265 in pennies over two weeks. Well done to Kylie 8.6 who raised the most at £35.70 and to Humanities Group 8HU3 who collectively raised £62.43. This demonstrated the importance of being an active citizen in the world and to be responsible for making small changes today which when combined with others will have a big impact on the future of tomorrow.
Fairtrade Reaches Out To Primary Schools - March 2017
Sir Jonathan North College were honoured to host an Eco Event for Overdale Infants, Inglehurst, Marriott, Avenue and Braunstone Frith Primary Schools this week.
The Fairtrade Group outlined the importance of their school group and the different ways they have raised awareness and funds for the Fairtrade Foundation. The aims of the Eco Event were to gain a greater understanding of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and Eco-Schools topics. The workshops involved The Great Carbon Footprint Game: showing how even the smallest item has different environmental and social impacts (including Fairtrade) and investigating the ways which farmers can look after their soils to help grow healthy plants and prevent flooding. The final workshop outlined how ‘Just Fairtrade’ runs an exclusively fairly traded shop in Leicester and helped students to begin to think about the importance of Fairtrade and the impact that it has.
Roots and Shoots Award: Gold Award Winners - March 2017
Miss Hannam and Mrs Ball took three members of the Fair Trade Group to the Roots and Shoots Award last Friday at the Barbican Centre in London. The students were invited along to the event to represent the Fair Trade Group as they were winners of a Gold Award for their work in raising awareness of the Fairtrade Foundation. The Fair Trade Group worked extremely hard in the lead up to the event to create beautiful display work which showed all of the different events and campaigns they had worked on this year. The students were lucky enough to meet Dr Jane Goodall and be presented with awards for their charity work. They won a year’s subscription to Love Nature magazines which we’ve given to the Geography Team, a chimpanzee teddy from Dr Jane Goodall, a signed copy of Dr Jane Goodall’s new book ‘A Prayer for World Peace’ and a trophy in recognition of their contributions in achieving a better world for people, animals and the environment.
It was lovely to see our students’ achievements and hard work recognised and refreshing to see how spirited and motivated the event has made them to continue making changes in the world and to raise further awareness of different causes close to their hearts.
