Sir Jonathan North Community College

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The DofE is the world’s leading youth achievement award, giving millions of 14 to 24 year olds the opportunity to be the very best they can be.

The Dof E is all about going the extra mile – gaining new skills, pushing themselves physically, helping others and exploring new territories. At the same time students gather friendships, experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.

The DofE is a fun adventure and major challenge, has three progressive Award levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) and a wide range of activities to offer endless possibilities. A DofE award enhances any CV, helping the students to stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs or college.

Sir Jonathan North offers the chance for all its Year 9 pupils to take on their Bronze DofE Award. Once they have achieved this, they will also have a chance to take their skills to the next level with the Silver Award in Year 10. The College do not offer the Gold Award as participants must be 16+ years old, but they may get this opportunity when they go to Sixth Form College.

Sir Jonathan North currently has a group of around 52 students undertaking their Bronze Award.

Enrolment for the next cohort is currently taking place.  Please click here for a letter handed to all interested students.  For more information on undertaking DofE at Sir Jonathan North please click here for the presentation given to parents. Please note that the College do not take on any direct entrants for the Silver Award (when participants take on their Silver award without having a Bronze Award).

To achieve the Bronze or Silver award, participants need to complete four sections:

  • Volunteering - help people or the community
  • Physical - to help you strive to become physically fitter
  • Skill - take on a challenge to learn more about an interest you have
  • Expedition - go on a hiking and camping trip.

And here’s the best bit – the participant chooses exactly what they want to do! The programme can be full of activities and projects that suit their interests.

On completion, they will also receive a certificate for the most recognised youth achievement award in the world!
