Top of the Bench Regional Finals
Top of the Bench is a national competition that tests students’ chemical wits, independence and knowledge via a practical challenge and a quiz.
The East Midlands Regional Finals took place on Saturday 20 January. This involved fourteen teams from five counties at Derby University. To get to this stage, the teams had already ranked in the top three in their local competition heats, which had involved a chemistry quiz. The regional finals involved a challenging theory paper, as well as a practical challenge in which students had to ‘Save the Millennium Falcon’ by setting up a cooling reaction to reach a specific temperature in exactly one minute.
After completing the tasks, which challenged teamwork skills, theoretical knowledge, practical ability and problem-solving skills, students were given a demonstration of impressive chemical reactions.
Well done to Olivia, Jasmine, Husna and Naomi who represented Sir Jonathan North with great enthusiasm and worked extremely well as a team. This is only the second time Sir Jonathan North has entered a team to this competition and to reach the regional finals is a credit to our students. Well done!
