Statue of Alice to be Unveiled Next Month
Suffragette, Alice Hawkins will have her statue unveiled next month in Leicester's market square and representatives from Sir Jonathan North have been invited to attend the ceremony.
The Leicester Mercury reported this week that a 7 foot tall bronze sculpture of Alice Hawkins will be unveiled next month to commemorate the centenary of The Representation of the People Act 1918, which gave all men and some women the right to vote. The statue will be the first in Leicester to celebrate a named woman and will be the first of three figures of inspirational women to be unveiled in the UK this year to mark this centenary.
Alice's great grandson, Peter Barratt, recently opened The Alice Hawkins active playground at Sir Jonathan North. This playground provides younger students with an area to play table tennis, hopscotch and other sports with their friends.
