Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
It is recognised that all students have learning potential and will make best progress when their learning needs are addressed.
Special Educational Need includes:
- students who need support because of absence from school for medical or other reasons
- those students who are experiencing any difficulty which significantly limits their learning in relation to others of their age and
- those students who are gifted in one or more areas of the curriculum.
The Skills for Learning Skills for Life Team is responsible for the identification of Special Needs, working closely with teachers in all areas, and for the co-ordination of support and specialist teaching. This includes work with supporting agencies; other College teams such as the Mentoring Team, Behaviour Team, Welfare Officer and Counsellor; parents and students so that the individual needs of students can be met.
The Team aims to ensure that students have full access to the College curriculum as well as achieving the highest levels possible of literacy and numeracy. Most support for students is in class, but arrangements vary according to the needs of students and how it is felt they can best be met.
Gifted and Talented students are identified by the recommended criteria given by the 'Gifted and Talented Youth' Organisation. Each subject area has a responsibility to make appropriate provision for gifted and talented students and a range of additional opportunities are offered to help develop these students' gifts.
The College has reviewed the access arrangements for students with disabilities and learning difficulties. There is improved wheelchair access to the buildings, but this does not yet allow access to all subject areas.
Students who are absent from College with Medical Needs may be educated at The Leicester Hospital School or arrangements may be made through the Education Welfare Service to meet their educational needs at home.
