Alice Hawkins' Statue Unveiled
Anika, Dibjeet and Mrs White were lucky enough to be invited for the unveiling of the Alice Hawkin's statue.
It was really inspiring that so many people attended this special event, despite the terrible weather! We marched from Secular Hall to the statue near Leicester Market. The woman who played Alice gave her speech really well and the whole event reminded me that women's suffrage is still an ongoing issue, particularly in countries where women STILL don't have the right to vote!
During the event Anika and I were interviewed by the BBC and then met many VIP guests at the Town Hall: the Lord Mayor, City Mayor and Peter Barratt, Alice Hawkins’ great grandson. It was a lovely experience to see Leicester’s first female statue being revealed which will remind us of Alice Hawkins’ suffrage 100 years ago.
