Travel and Tourism Introductory Certificate Overview

Travel and Tourism is a vocational course offered at KS4. It is the study of where people go on holiday in the UK and Europe, the organisations in the Travel and Tourism Industry and customer service in the industry.

This option will suit those who have an interest in working in the Hospitality, Travel and Tourism industry. There is a clear progression route through A-levels, BTEC or NVQs in this subject. You need to enjoy working independently and want to try something new.

KS4 Introductory Certificate Structure

In Year 10 you will be following the Edexcel BTEC Introductory Certificate in Hospitality, Travel
and Tourism.  This is a Level 1 course and is equivalent to two GCSEs at level D to G.
The following are the units you will do:

Unit 1 – Starting work in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism
This unit will allow you to look at the different jobs that you could do in the Hospitality, Travel and Tourism industry. You will look at the different types of organisations and how your lifestyle could affect job choice.  Visits to local hospitality, travel and tourism organisations will be a key part of this unit.

Unit 2 – Introducing Customer Service
You will study the different types of customer service you would meet in the industry. You will also learn about how to communicate to customers and care for them and practice showing good communication skills through role plays.

Unit 3 – Financial Management
This unit allows you to learn about the different sources of income you can expect when you reach adult life.  You will look at how to manage your own money and plan a personal budget for yourself.

Unit 4 – Using Displays in Travel and Tourism
This unit allows you to look at how Travel and Tourism organisations use displays to attract customers. You will then be given the opportunity to plan and produce a display for a Travel and Tourism organisation.

In Year 11 you will follow the OCR GCSE Leisure and Tourism Single Award. This is a course worth one GCSE grade A* - G. The following are the units that you will do:

Unit 1 – Understanding the Leisure and Tourism Industries
This unit allows you to look at the different organisations in the Leisure and Tourism Industry and how they operate as a business. You will see the employment opportunities and look at visitor attractions across the UK and across the world. This unit will be assessed as an external exam.

Unit 2 – Moving forward in Leisure and Tourism
This unit allows you to look at some of the key features of the Leisure and Tourism industry. You will be able to look at marketing in Leisure and Tourism, the different types of customers in Leisure and Tourism and how Leisure and Tourism organisations find out about why customers visit them. This unit will be assessed using a controlled assessment within lesson time.

KS4 Introductory Certificate Content

The course is a mixture of classroom or computer lessons and visits to local Travel and Tourism attractions. Each unit in Year 10 requires the completion of a piece of coursework and this will be done through class work and research during computer lessons. In Year 11 you will sit one exam and produce one piece of coursework.

You will work on individual assignments. This may take you out into the local community. You will have the opportunity to benefit from local business links, guest speakers and visits to local travel and tourism organisations

You will work in small groups to make use of tourist information centres, the internet, shop window displays, brochures, videos, posters, advertisements, specific attractions and holiday destinations

Additional Information

The focus of the Travel and Tourism courses is for students to study a real life working industry. The Travel and Tourism Industry is one of the largest and fastest growing in the UK.

Students learn through a variety of teaching methods and learn skills that can be used within the industry. The skills are to identify the appeal of European Holiday destinations and cost holidays for different types of customers. They will also learn how to provide customer service.

Both of the Travel and Tourism courses involves going on educational visits and looking at how organisations within the industry operate and deal with customers. Examples of past visits have been to the Belmont House Hotel, Twycross Zoo, Snibston Discovery Park and Birmingham Airport.

What exams are there?
There is no exam in this course in Year 10.  You will need to produce a portfolio for each unit and gain a pass mark.   This course is graded pass, merit or distinction.

In Year 11 you will need to sit one exam and you will be graded from A* - G.

Option Block
BTEC Hospitality, Travel and Tourism is a course that is equivalent to two GCSEs grades D – G. This means you need to choose it in both option 3 and 4.

Career Information
This course will help you if you wish to follow a career in the Hospitality, Travel and Tourism industry. There are many jobs that can be done either working in this country and abroad. You could work in a hotel, in a travel agency, at an airport, or on an aeroplane or in a holiday resort. You could use the information you gain to provide a guiding service to tourists or advise people on where to travel.

Progress Information
The course allows progression onto college courses where you can do a BTEC First Certificate in Travel and Tourism or a BTEC National in Travel and Tourism. Also university courses are offered in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism across the country.

Travel and Tourism First Certificate Overview

KS4 First Certificate Structure

You will be following the Edexcel BTEC First Certificate in Travel and Tourism and the Edexcel GCSE short course in French.

Travel and Tourism is a Level 2 course equivalent to 2 GCSEs at A*-C.

The Travel and Tourism course comprises three units:

Unit 1 - The UK Travel and Tourism Industry
You will find out about the different types of tourism and the organisations that are within the industry. You will also discover how the industry has developed and changed over the years.

Unit 2 - Exploring Customer service in Travel and Tourism
You will learn about the skills and techniques needed for giving excellent customer service. You will be assessed in real work situations either through work experience or role play.

Unit 3 - European Holiday Destinations
You will investigate either UK or European destinations and discover which are the most popular destinations. You will build up knowledge of these destinations so you can give advice to people.

Additional Information

There is no exam in this course.  All you need to do is submit three pieces of coursework and gain at least a pass mark.   Final grades are pass, merit or distinction.
