Travel and Tourism Level One Certificate Overview

Travel and Tourism is a vocational course offered at KS4. It is the study of where people go on holiday in the UK and Europe, the organisations in the Travel and Tourism Industry and customer service in the industry, different jobs in the travel and tourism industry and organising visits to Travel and Tourism visitor attractions.

This option will suit those who have an interest in working in the Travel and Tourism industry. There is a clear progression route through A-levels, BTEC or NVQs in this subject. You need to enjoy working independently and want to try something new.

KS4 Level One Certificate Structure

In Year 10 you will be following the Edexcel BTEC Level One Certificate in Travel and Tourism.  This is a Level 1 course and is equivalent to two GCSEs at grades E and F.

The following are the units you will do:
Unit 5 – Researching at Tourist Destination
This unit will allow you to look at different tourism destinations.  You will research three destinations finding out how to get there, places to stay, attractions and advantages and disadvantages of going there. You will then choose one of the destinations and do a presentation about it.

Unit 14 – The Role of the Air Cabin Crew
This unit allows you to find out what being an air cabin crew would be like.  You will look at their roles and responsibilities and what they have to do for health and safety.  They will then need to do a health and safety demonstration and customer service on board a plane.

Unit 15 – The Role of the Overseas Resort Representative
In this unit you will look at the job of an overseas resort representative.  This will include looking at their roles and responsibilities, presenting a welcome meeting, booking an excursion and understanding the advantages and disadvantages of working as an overseas resort representative.

Unit 6 – Planning for and taking part in a visit
This unit allows you to plan and take part in a visit to a travel and tourism destination.  You will need to research a destination, plan a visit to the destination, take part in the visit and comment on the success of the visit.
In Year 11 you will follow the Edexcel BTEC Level Two Certificate in Travel and Tourism.  This is a course worth one GCSE grade A*-C. 
The following are the units you will do:
Unit 1 – The UK Travel and Tourism Sector
This unit allows you to look at the UK Travel and Tourism sector.  You will look at the reasons people travel and types of tourism.  How tourism helps the UK economy, the roles of different organisations in the UK travel and tourism sector and how they work together.

Unit 3 – Understanding the nature and effects of world travel
In this unit you will look at where and why people travel to different places.  You will locate continent, natural features, holiday destinations and getaways.  You will look at the climate of travel destinations and explain time zones and time differences.

Unit 24 – Residential Studies Visit in Travel and Tourism
This unit allows the students to plan, participate in and evaluate a residential study visit.  You will need to meet the aims and objectives of the visit, complete a risk assessment and evaluate the success of the visit.  The destination of the visit has yet to be decided but could be in the UK or abroad.

KS4 Level One Certificate Content

The course is a mixture of classroom or computer lessons and visits to local Travel and Tourism attractions. Each unit in both years requires the completion of a piece of coursework and this will be done through class work and research during computer lessons.

You will work on individual assignments. This may take you out into the local community. You will have the opportunity to benefit from local business links, guest speakers and visits to local travel and tourism organisations.

You will work in small groups to make use of tourist information centres, the internet, shop window displays, brochures, videos, posters, advertisements, specific attractions and holiday destinations.

Additional Information

The focus of the Travel and Tourism courses is for students to study a real life working industry. The Travel and Tourism Industry is one of the largest and fastest growing in the UK.
 
Students learn through a variety of teaching methods and learn skills that can be used within the industry. The skills are to identify the appeal of European Holiday destinations and cost holidays for different types of customers. They will also learn how to provide customer service.

Both of the Travel and Tourism courses involves going on educational visits and looking at how organisations within the industry operate and deal with customers. Examples of past visits have been to the Holiday Inn Hotel, Twycross Zoo, Snibston Discovery Park and Birmingham Airport.  There will also be a residential study visit in Year 11.

What exams are there?
There is no exam in this course in Year 10.  You will need to produce a portfolio for each unit and gain a pass mark.  
Option Block
BTEC Hospitality, Travel and Tourism is a course that is equivalent to two GCSEs grades D – G. This means you need to choose it in both option 3 and 4.

Career Information
This course will help you if you wish to follow a career in the Hospitality, Travel and Tourism industry. There are many jobs that can be done either working in this country and abroad. You could work in a hotel, in a travel agency, at an airport, or on an aeroplane or in a holiday resort. You could use the information you gain to provide a guiding service to tourists or advise people on where to travel.
Progress Information
The course allows progression onto college courses where you can do a BTEC First Certificate in Travel and Tourism or a BTEC National in Travel and Tourism. Also university courses are offered in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism across the country.

Travel and Tourism Level Two Certificate Overview

This option will suit those who have an interest in a vocational, work-related subject focusing on Travel and Tourism. There are clear progression routes through

KS4 Level Two Extended Certificate Structure

You will be following the Edexcel BTEC Level Two Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism.
Travel and Tourism is a Level 2 course equivalent to 2 GCSEs at A*-C.
The Travel and Tourism course comprises six units:
Unit 1 – The UK Travel and Tourism Sector
This unit allows you to look at the UK Travel and Tourism sector.  You will look at the reasons people travel and types of tourism.  How tourism helps the UK economy, the roles of different organisations in the UK travel and tourism sector and how they work together.
Unit 2 – Understanding Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
This unit allows the students to study customer service in different organisations.  You will explain the different approaches to customer service, the methods used to measure and monitor customer service, review the needs of the customer and how travel and tourism organisations meet and exceed customer expectations.
Unit 3 – Understanding the nature and effects of world travel

Unit 8 – Worldwide Holiday Destinations
This unit allows students to investigate worldwide holiday destinations.  You will identify and locate worldwide destinations for different types of customers.  Select worldwide destinations to meet specific customer needs and describe factors that impact on travel to worldwide destinations. 
Unit 22 – UK Visitor Attractions
This unit allows you to investigate why people go to visitor attractions.   You will describe products and services, their purpose and the appeal of two visitor attractions.  You will also show why visitor attractions are important to UK tourism.
Unit 24 – Residential Studies Visit in Travel and Tourism

Additional Information

What exams are there?
There is no exam in this course.  All you need to do is submit three pieces of coursework and gain at least a pass mark.   Final grades are pass, merit or distinction.
