This course is for students who are interested in Dance as a performer and choreographer. It is also suitable for anyone who would like to pursue the Performing Arts profession.
You will look at how to become a better performer and how to create your own pieces of dance. You will also study how social and historical influences inform Dance. The course focuses on a variety of dance styles and will challenge your technical and expressive skills as a performer and increase your understanding of choreography and dance theory.
Year 10x 2 hours a week
Year 11x 3 hours a week
The Level 2 BTEC Extended Certificate in Performing Arts Dance is followed over the 2 year course. There are 3 units studied which are 1. 'The Development of Dance', 2. Performing Dance and 3. Exploring Urban Dance Styles. The course is a mixture of technique lessons, choreography lessons and written work, however there is no exam at the end of the 2 years as the course is completed throughout the 2 years in lesson time.

Dance and Drama in Expressive Arts are popular subjects at Sir Jonathan North Community College. We have regular Dance and Drama clubs at lunchtimes and after school, culminating in performances for the Whole College Production which is usually in January and then a large work share from across the key stages and year which happens towards the end of the summer term. There are aslo opprotunites in Dance to be part of the gifted and talented group and perform as part of the 'Leicestershire Youth Dance Platform' at the Peepul Centre.
What exams are there?
This course is based on the production and presentation of evidence. This requires students to complete work to deadlines and to be responsible for the collation and presentation of this work. Each unit is internally assessed, internally and externally verified. There are no exams for this course.
Career Information
Possible career options include choreographer, performer, teacher or Dance therapist. This course is the equivalent of 2 GCSE’s of A*-C grade.
Progress Information
From this course there are a number of routes available at AS or BTEC levels. Students who study this may be interested in studying Performing Arts or Dance further at College.
Pre-requisites
To have achieved a good level at Key Stage 3. This course also demands that you have confidence to perform on your own, enjoy creating your own choreography and commit to learning dance theory.
